AUTHOR PETER GURALNICK & ERNST JORGENSEN
PUBLISHER BALLANTINE BOOKS
COUNTRY U.S.
RELEASE DATE 1999
PAGES LARGE HARDBOUND: 392 PAGES!
PRICE $24.95
COMMENTS The authors were granted unprecedented access to hundreds of thousands of photos, documents, letters, artifacts, and memorabilia by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Guralnick and Jorgensen present the King as you've never seen him before. Elvis Day by Day is a complete account of public, private, rare, forgotten, and renowned moments, captured with such detail and immediacy they read like diary entries in a life--from first steps to the first time the young "hillbilly cat" stepped on stage; from the creation of a revolutionary new sound to the last days of a universally known, tragically misunderstood music legend. Lavishly illustrated with more than three hundred color and black-and-white photographs, this one-of-a-kind volume features such hitherto unknown details of Elvis' childhood in Tupelo as a father's touching postcards from prison and the family's backbreaking struggle to make ends meet. It includes Elvis' first work application at eighteen in which he describes his leisure-time activities as "sing[ing], playing ball, working on car, going to movies." At last, the complete story of how Elvis met his legendary manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is revealed in detail, and long-debated mysteries like Elvis's famous lost tryout for the Arthur Godfrey show are finally put to rest. In addition, the reader will find an invaluable and reliable reference guide to every recording session, record release, song hit, movie, and live performance (including a number of shows not previously documented)--clearing up in the process many misconceptions and misunderstandings about Elvis' life. All the facts are here--from Elvis's unlikely visit with President Nixon in 1970 to his spontaneous articulation of patriotism and pride in a 1957 telegram to a marine private (coincidentally named Nixon). Within these facts are a story: funny, sad, sometimes uplifting, occasionally disturbing--but always fascinating for the disarmingly unbuttoned, behind-the-scenes view of a celebrated life. From private moments to public milestones, this is the first complete and accurate chronology of Elvis' life, in a form that offers instant accessibility to Elvis expert and casual reader alike. Elvis Day by Day is an extraordinary piece of American musical history, bringing the life and times of Elvis Presley into dazzling focus for the record--and for the ages., From details of his childhood in Tupelo, through his rise to success, to his death, a chronology of Elvis Presley's life and career draws on an array of archival material, photographs, documents, letters, artifacts, and memorabilia. AUTHOR ALAN HANSON
PUBLISHER I UNIVERSE INC
COUNTRY U.S.
RELEASE DATE 2007
PAGES 314 PAGES!
PRICE $19.95
COMMENTS In 1957, Elvis Aron Presley was still a one man phenomenon with six titles on the charts, one movie to his credit, and two movies soon to follow. But while he pursued his dream of becoming a Hollywood actor, the military draft threatened to shatter it along with his wildly successful rock 'n' roll career. Elvis couldn't resist the excitement he found performing on stage before swarms of shrieking teenage girls, and in that final year before he entered the U.S. Army, he went back on the road for three short tours. Elvis '57 recalls that magical year when the King played to audiences a quarter of a million people strong, and controversy and pandemonium accompanied him wherever he went. Alan Hanson takes us for a rollicking ride through eighteen major cities in the United States and Canada as he chronicles the most exciting tours of Elvis's career. In Chicago, Elvis wore his famed gold lame suit and thirteen girls fainted in an effort to reach him. In Vancouver, British Columbia, thousands left their seats and rushed the stage, forcing him to abruptly end the show. Drawing on first-hand accounts from the disc jockeys on the front lines of Elvis's exploding career and fans who attended the '57 concerts, Hanson sweeps you back to the year that forever changed the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Photos., Graceland has opened the doors to its extensive archives for the first time ever, allowing previously inaccessible historic documents and memorabilia to be reproduced in facsimile, collectible form. With biographical text by acclaimed Elvis expert Robert Gordon, The Elvis Treasures tells the King's life story through handwritten letters, press releases, movie scripts, photographs and additional artifacts. Where else can you get a ticket to "Frank Sinatra's Welcome Home Party for Elvis Presley," evaluate the Kings hand-drawn football plays, read his first RCA contract, and check out a book that he borrowed from the Humes High School library as an eighth-grader? Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Elvis death, this unique interactive book also contains a 60-minute CD of interviews spanning his career, providing a formerly unavailable portrait of the King in his own words. The Elvis Treasures contains 22 removable documents, including: -rare promotional photos issued by Sun Records in 1954-55 -a 1958 Christmas card from Elvis and the Colonel (as Santa) -Elvis's letter to Anita, his Memphis girlfriend, expressing his love and commitment to her while he was stationed in Germany -an invitation to the premiere for Viva Las Vegas -telegrams Vernon received upon Elvis' death from Johnny Cash, Isaac Hayes, Governor George Wallace, B. B. King, Little Richard and others Description of the 60-minute CD of interviews The first interview, track 1, was conducted in 1955 by Mae Boren Axton, months before the song she gave him, "Heartbreak Hotel," would become his breakthrough hit. Track 2, recorded roughly a year later, finds Elvis admitting, in an unguarded moment, that his performing style was inspired in part by the gospel quarters he'd always loved; it's a confession that comes back to haunt him in the following interview, conducted in August 1956 by Paul Wilder of TV Guide (track 3). When Wilder uses the term "holy roller" in asking him about the religious influence on his music, Elvis interrupts him"I have never used that expression"with the hair-curling command of a preacher. The TV Guide interview makes for fascinating listening, as Elvis uses charm, biting sarcasm, and the sheer force of his conviction to parry Wilder's interrogation. Tracks 4 and 5 are far more joyful in spirit, as we hear first Elvis' parents and then the singer himself tossed about in the maelstrom of his triumphant Tupelo homecoming concert in 1956. ("Baby Play House," his mother responds unforgettably when asked her favorite Elvis song.) Then we jump ahead to Elvis' Army years and a montage of clips reflecting his life in the service, America's reaction, and his return home (track 6). Elvis speaks earnestly about working the same details as the other soldiers, but by the end of the selection seems quite happy about returning to his "normal" life. Track 7 finds him back at work, in a brief interview on the set of Blue Hawaii. But what follows, an excerpt from a long conversation with Lloyd Shearer of Parade magazine (track 8) ONE COPY ONLY!

TAR

TITLE THAT'S ALRIGHT, ELVIS (BOOK)
AUTHOR SCOTTY MOORE
PUBLISHER SCHIRMER BOOKS
COUNTRY U.S.
RELEASE DATE 1997
PAGES 271 PAGES!
PRICE $14.95
COMMENTS The untold story of Elvis first guitarist and manager, Scotty Moore. For the first time, guitarist Scotty Moore tells the real story behind his years with Elvis Presley. When Elvis first showed up at Sam Phillip's Memphis-based Sun Records studio, he was a shy teenager in search of a sound. Sam asked Scotty and bass player Bill Black, both members of the popular country band The Tune Wranglers, to work with Elvis on his music in advance of his first recording session. While clowning around in the studio they came up with a version "That's Alright"; it was released as Elvis' first single, and launched his career. Scotty and Bill toured with the young singer, and played on all of his Sun sessions and his first recordings for RCA; Scotty served as the business manager for the trio, in essence working as Elvis' first manager. When the trio broke up, Scotty retired from music-making. He has maintained his silence about Elvis since, despite repeated requests for interviews to tell his side of the story. With Bill Black and Elvis both dead, he is the only remaining member of the original trio who can tell the true story of how Elvis transformed popular music---and how he created the guitar sound that has become the prototype for all rock guitar that followed.Jim Dickerson is the author of Schirmers Goin Back to Memphis. He is a Nashville-based journalist and writer.ONE COPY ONLY!

musical

TITLE ELVIS: A MUSICAL INVENTORY 1939-55 (BOOK)
AUTHOR RICHARD BOUSSIRON
PUBLISHER MUSIC MENTOR BOOKS
COUNTRY ENGLAND
RELEASE DATE 2004
PAGES 264 PAGES!
PRICE $14.95
COMMENTS Presented like a discography, this is a detailed listing of the King's musical influences: hymns and spirituals he sang at church, songs he learned at school or heard on the radio, the live blues he listened to in Shakerag - with full historical details shown for each song. Very Hard to find. Magnificent catalogue of music that Elvis probably heard and perhaps played during his early life, together with detailed information about all music played, not always recorded, sometimes lost, at Sun. Also information about very early radio performances (dating back to 1944!) and personal appearances. Excellent source, shouldn't be missed. If you're interested in finding out what made Elvis tick musically, this is as good a place as any. Richard really did do a lot of research to the origin of each and every song and that is, I must say, great to read. We also get info on more acetates like 'Fool, Fool, Fool' that have been recorded but are reported lost. Everything is in here: from Elvis' childhood to his live performances. From the Sun Sessions to the first TV appearances. ONE COPY ONLY!
