Hi Elvis collectors,
SPECIAL RARE VINYL UPDATE # 4
Welcome to the fourth RARE VINYL UPDATE list. We now have something around 100 items listed so it's getting to a point where we will not be sending this large of an e mail update from now on because it might take too long for some of you to download. Please go to the RARE VINYL page to see more items. In fact, we will be adding more later today. So, if you collect vinyl, you should visit this page daily to see the additions. A good portion of these items are all one of a kind and you will NEVER find them anywhere else.
Sincerely,
Paul Dowling

After 32 years of collecting Elvis records worldiwde I had no idea that there were Mexican 78's made until maybe three years ago. These are even rarer than Japanese 78's. This particular one was the SECOND 78 issued in Mexico and also has a different song coupling than any other country.

Most, if not all, of the Japanese 78's came with a "picture cover". But actually this cover was a generic one for quite a few 78's. One side had a color pic of El from the LPM 1382 ELVIS (second LP) session) while the other also used this photo but added an RCA Victrola along with listings (in Japanese) of other ELvis 78's. Since it was very hard to scan this cover because of the size we have used other scans that we've had in our files. One of these also shows a picture cover for a 45RPM but this is NOT included with this package.
Please click on the photo for a larger version of the label plus the picture cover.

If you're a serious Elvis vinyl collector you are aware that New Zealand issued a few 78's WITH picture covers. To say these are rare is an understatement. The record is MINT - but the main rarity is in the cover. Unfortunately, our scanner isn't large enough to show the entire cover but you can see that there are tears at the top in a few places. Other than that, considering its' age, it is in pretty damned good condition. There are no seam splits and no writing or labels attached. This is one of the RAREST Elvis 78's ever!!!

Long after 78's were deleted in all most countries, SOuth Africa continued to release them. Even though this had the same coupling as the U.S, its' rarity is because the song titles were only on a 78 in Brazil.

In the early 1960's, RCA tried to market some of their artits on a new 33 1/s RPM vinyl format. There were only 5 Elvis singles that were issued and this is the very first. Please note that we have TWO different variations of the label and these are both pictured when clicking on the photo to the left. The price above is for the cover and just ONE of the records so you can choose which one you'd want. Both records are MINT _ and you can see that the cover is basically MINT - with light circle wear. If you'd want to buy just one of the records please e mail us for a price.

Technically, this was the very first Elvis Presley picture cover!! When RCA bought El's contract from SUN they immediately reissued the five SUN singles and then he had his first hit with Heartbreak Hotel. It is actually not known what single came inside this cover but my guess would be that it was a promo sleeve sent out with Heartbreak inside. This was of course sent out to promote this to dj's and the music industry. This cartoon type picture cover supposedly depicted Elvis' rise to fame. At any rate this is super, super rare and in BEAUTIFUL CONDITION and you'll never find another this good.

COMMENTS |
If anyone reading this has this record I will be shocked, amazed, and stunned. Thanks to the great Denny Mitchell I have a copy. Ok, what is this MONSTER?? It is a U.S. BMG two sided gray label (NOTE that the scan does NOT represent the exact color of the label as in reality it is gray) 45 RPM that was issued in 2003 by BMG SPECIAL PRODUCTS. The other side contains the exact same label, song, etc as on the flip. It was made as a promotional tool for the ELVIS PRESLEY ILLUMINATED CD / RECORD PLAYER RADIO (which came out a few years ago and is now DELETED!) and was released during the ELVIS ON SUN campaign. NO ONE (I repeat.....NO ONE!) EVEN KNOWS ABOUT THIS! This copy is TOTALLY 100% MINT! It comes in a plain white sleeve. You can't consider yourself a big Elvis vinyl collector if you don't have this baby!! You'd better get it now before it doubles or triples in price!

Any collector is familar with this MONSTER. It is the temporary cover that was made for EPA 747 and was sent to radio stations before RCA had a picture cover made. As we all know, this is really an envelope made of heavy paper. Letters are in dark blue. The copy we have for sale looks MUCH better than how it's pictured here in the photos. It's hard to grade the condition but trust me you'll love it. This is JUST the temporary sleeve and the record is not included but of course that's no big deal as the record is easy to find.

CHILE
NOTE: If you're an Elvis Presley worldwide record collector you'll know that, in general, it is VERY hard to find his South American records and covers in good condition. Ususally there are names written on the labels and covers, stickers attached, or the covers are torn, have tape, etc. With this in mind we must stress that the EP's listed below are in probably the best condition that you'll ever find.

This was a various artist / Elvis EP issued January 1958. It is not known why, in 1958, RCA Chile would put Elvis on an EP with other artists unless it was to try and promote the other releases. What is interesting is that the back cover and the label list the Elvis song to be "BLUEBERRY HILL" but, when the record is played, "MEAN WOMAN BLUES" is heard. Whether copies exist with "BLUEBERRY HILL" is unknown. This comes with the RCA VICTOR rectangular lines label!

As is obvious, this cover is similar to EPA 4319 KING CREOLE VOL. 1 (U.S.) but the picture is reversed and the background is bluish-green. This was the same EP as EPA 4321 KING CREOLE VOL. 2 (U.S.) except that the songs were arranged in a different order. It is interesting to note that KING CREOLE VOL. 2 was issued before Vol. 1 in Chile!!

This was another various artist / Elvis EP issued in 1959. The front cover picture is of Ricardo Garcia, a Chilean radio disc jockey. By 1959, Elvis was an established star, even in Chile, so there was no logical reason why RCA would have to put him on a various artist EP like this. This is one of the rarest of all Chilean Elvis EP's. This comes with the RCA VICTOR rectangular lines label!

Released in Sept. 1964, this was more than a regular EP in that it contained eight songs. In fact, the label states "1/2 long play" but actually this was more than half of a 12" LP which averaged twelve songs at that time. This was the only RCA Elvis EP worldwide that has ever had this many cuts. ALso note that it is on 33 1/3 RPM. It is interesting to note that the version of "IT HURTS ME" on Side 2 is without the Jordanaires. Chile may have been the first country to issue this song this way. Previously, it was thought that Italy had been the only country to release this unmixed version on a single (45N1410 KISSIN COUSINS / IT HURTS ME), but it's possible Chile was actually the first. There were two labels which of course indicate that there were two pressings of this record. Both have the same version of "IT HURTS ME". Unfortunately, it is not known exactly when each was issued or which was the original but both are very rare. Another thing! The cover for this EP was very unusual. Basically, it was a 7" x 14" piece of cardboard folded in half with the color paper cover glued on (but only glued on the left side)! As a result, there were no sides to this except for where the cardboard was folded. A very strange idea. This is the version with the RED DOT label!!

This white label double promotional EP and single is the most unusual item
that has ever been issued on Elvis from any country! It is really one 33 RPM EP and one 45 RPM single combined into a double pocket booklet cover EP package. This was RCA Japan's version of the EASY COME EASY GO EP but much, much better than anywhere. First, they changed the title to "GO-GO-GO". Then the cover opened up like a book with words of all the songs in Japanese and English inside! And FINALLY, they put this GREAT unreleased picture of ERl on the back. It's worth buying this EP JUST for the back cover.

(STEREO VERSION) Let's just say it now! This is one of the (IF NOT THE) most sought after Elvis EP's in the world for all kinds of reasons - the great cover, the songs, and the history behind it and the fact that this is the ONLY EP from any country to have been issued in both MONO and STEREO. Yes, just like LP's were issued both ways in the 60's, this EP was issued two ways. Actually, even though the cover and label state that the songs are in STEREO, the truth is that only "VIVA LAS VEGAS" and "MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE" were in true STEREO while the other two songs were electronically reproduced. This STEREO verssion is even rarer than the MONO!
NOTE # 1: This EP was originally scheduled to have been released in the U.S. with the same number but different title (HEAR THE USA THE ELVIS WAY). RCA in New York changed their minds and issued EPA 4387 EASY COME, EASY GO instead. The comparisons between EPA 4386 and EPA 4387 are obvious! Both have the exact same front cover design with only a change in picture. The back cover of EPA 4387 has the exact same b/w picture but enlarged slighly. Why the U.S. decided against this release is not known.
NOTE # 2: Japan also released this same EP but with a different number and title - SCP 1331 MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. All songs were in electronic STEREO on this EP.
Please click on either photo for a larger version of the front cover and the STEREO label.

One of the most sought after Elvis LP's in the world! This had the same songs as ELVIS (the second Elvis LP in the U.S.) but the cover was totally different and is the reason this is such a MONSTER!!!. This looks like it was just purchased today! |

(RD4A-010). This incredibably rare version of the GREATEST HITS 8 LP box set was issued by READER'S DIGEST in 1979 with this special white cover with gold lettering on the front and blue lettering on the side. It was made as a test and offered to selected customers for a month. Each label is on the old Dynagroove Label. They are black with red and white lettering. It was then deleted and replaced with a different cover and more common version. We only have ONE COPY. It normally sells for $800 +. |

This was an 8 LP box set issued in the winter of 1980 and made only for the VICTOR FAMILY CLUB, a special mail order company. It contained two complete LP's on Elvis (see below). It is one of the RAREST Elvis records in the world! MINT / MINT. Please note that the cover pictured to the left is one of the Elvis LP covers and is NOT the cover of the box which has multiple artits on it.
Please click on the photo for a larger version of the cover of the two Elvis LP's.
